ABOUT THE ARTIST

Being a native of Paris, Texas, I spent much of my childhood exploring the vast woods near my home. Growing up in this small, isolated, East Texas town and investing long periods of time communing with nature has kept me in touch with my environment.

In 1968, I earned my Bachelor of Arts degree from East Texas State University in Commerce, Texas, where I studied to become a Graphic Designer. Following my graduation from college, I moved to Dallas, where I lived and worked as a Graphic Designer for over 30 years.

In the fall or 1996, I applied to The University of North Texas to earn a Master of Fine Arts degree in  Studio Arts/Drawing & Painting. In December of 2000, I received my MFA degree.

ARTIST'S STATEMENT

First and foremost, I am a product of my environment. Growing up in a small town in northeast Texas has saddled me with a most peculiar sense of irony, and a tendency toward exaggeration, for which I am eternally grateful . . . I think!!!

My current work deals with exploration into two areas:

1 :: personal observations of life, past and present,
            indigenous to this area and,
2 :: thematic musings on universal connectedness.

Readily apparent in my work is the sense of fragility of time, the inevitability of obsolescence, the perpetuation of memories and the human compulsion to communicate. I often utilize reductive techniques to abrade surface content and texture in order to reveal obscured elements painted beneath. Dotted or dashed lines represent life and death cycles, lineage, or personal historical references—in other words—the passage of time. Grid patterns suggest memories of people, places, and moments or events remembered, as well as futuristic fantasies.

I frequently infuse graphic symbols along with architectural and mathematical elements to suggest a common thread, which not only ties us to our cultural, historical past, but also provides a window through which we may glimpse a broader sense of who we are. Ideally, this body of work is emblematic of the microcosm within which we exist.

My recent body of works can generally be epitomized by the juxtaposition of appropriated imagery frequently representative of cosmic elements and events, and often combined with symbolic drawings. This content is also frequently accompanied by text or typography. Surfaces are usually distressed or abraded to partially reveal obscured layers of imagery and text. Great emphasis is placed upon the omnipresent, often pervasive power of symbolism in our culture. Themes of connectedness, communication and remembrance of personal life experiences are inherent in my work.

I believe my style, palette, and choice of subject matter to be emblematic of my Texas roots and embrace my deep appreciation for my place of origin; however, I now live and work in Cortez, Colorado; an area that constantly inspires me.
